Night of Dance 2008

The Art of Expression
MAY 11, 2008
by PEDRO PEREZ

“To watch us dance is to hear our hearts speak. This Native American Hopi Indian saying could have easily been applied to our dancers as they brought words to life in the form of graceful movements and interpretive choreography at Solid Rock’s Night of Dance held on Saturday, May 10.
Night of Dance performance. Sharon Watson in front.
Led by Valerie Smalls, this collaborative effort between our Inspirational Dance Ministry Team, West Point Christian Fellowship, and AME Zion Church of Newburgh was a first for Solid Rock. With the help of our Solid Worship Choir to set the tone for the event, each subsequent dance performance conveyed the words of their musical selection with intensity, emotion, rhythm, and visual elegance.

Solo performance by Angie Ortiz to the song "I Can only Imagine" From the gentle synchronized gestures of the Solid Rock Little Praisers to the sure-footed impact of several solo performances, the sanctuary was filled with emotion as messages of salvation, hope, joy, adoration, forgiveness, and love were expressed in a combination of music, words, images, and movement.

As a surprise for many of our long time members, Sharon Watson gave a special solo performance to the song “I’m Gonna Be Ready” by Yolanda Adams. Sharon left Solid Rock two years ago when she and her family moved south, and was the former team leader for our Inspirational Praise Dance Team. This surprise visit was not only a welcomed treat for those of us that knew her, but also an inspiration for the dance team members she nurtured for several years.

From Angie Ortiz's (shown above) introspective solo to the song "I Can Only Imagine" - to a high-energy groove to the song "Better"; from Kimila Todd's (West Point Christian Fellowship) soul-stirring performance to "That Name" - to a dynamic arrangement by AME Zion Church to "Fly Away"; from Tatum Nathaniel's solo whose movements directed our eyes to the "Are You Amazed" video on the screen - to a our dance team's group interpretation of "Order My Steps" that brought us to our feet...each presentation demonstrated the diversity of worship through dance.

The atmosphere of praise and worship that this outreach event generated was visible in the faces of those in attendance. The smiles, cheers, worship, and tears of joy…communicated what was too deep for our souls to express in words.
