It is truly amazing to see how much our Solid Rock Inspirational Praise Dance Ministry has grown in the last year. What seemed to be an endless army of angels filling the church sanctuary was evident at this year’s Night of Dance on Saturday, May 2. At times even the aisles were overflowing with the graceful movements of our dancers as they made their way to and from the main platform.
Led by Valerie Smalls, and with the participation of other local and NYC churches (West Point Christian Fellowship, AME Zion Church of Newburgh, and Mount Zion Church of Queens, NY), our praise dance team made this an event brimming with diversity, inspiration, and drama. Performers young and old, big and small joined together to provide some of the best presentations I’ve seen since the debut of Night of Dance in 2008. While every performance demonstrated skill and creativity in its’ interpretation of their respective song selection, such as the military precision of the entire team in “Stand Out” and the unique father and son mime presentation [Michael, Sr. & Michael, Jr. Corlett] to “Stand”...there were a few that I must highlight for their soul-stirring impact.
The presentation of the song “Say Yes”, centered around a tormented drug addict portrayed by Angie Ortiz. Using only the movement of her body and expressions on her face, Angie clearly dug deep within herself to give that character life and make the emotional anguish real for us. Surrounded by angels who were encouraging her spirit with a message of hope, Angie was clearly torn between making a choice that will forever change her life. As the song continued, she painfully broke away from the chains of addiction that had caused her so much despair...and “said yes” to Christ. Symbolic of her new life, one of the angels clothed her with a garment "as white as snow". For anyone that has suffered the pain of any addiction either personally or through a loved one, Angie truly captured the feeling of victory as we in the audience celebrated with her character.
Another presentation that had to be one of the most powerful I’ve seen in a while was a skit by our Solid Rock Youth Ministry. Here the character of Christ, played by Matt Anson, dances joyfully with Chelsea Powell symbolizing the relationship that Christ has (or wants to have) with all of us. As they move together around the platform, five characters representing greed, lust, drunkenness, vanity, and mutilation began to tempt Chelsea. One by one, each of these temptations pulled her further and further away from Christ. Once Chelsea realized how far she was from Him, she struggled to make her way back; fighting and pleading but gaining little ground. In a dramatic visual display, Christ stepped in and held back temptation until Chelsea was free to dance again with Him. For me that image of Matt [Christ] standing like a mighty barrier between Chelsea [us] and those evils that draw us away is possibly the most amazing visual of Christ’s desire to have us close to Him.
Movement has power to stir the senses and emotions, and convey a message that cannot be expressed through words or song alone. The diverse presentations of that evening gave us much to think about, but all of them were bound by a common message...God is able.
